Glenlivet - Founder's Reserve

Mid 2015 I got a taste of The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve in a blind tasting. Back then I found the nose to be sweet and full of fudge and fruit with a bit young sharp spirit note. The palate was much like the nose and gave a note of citrus, honey, sweet and dried apricots. But the sharpness of the young spirit feeling made me not like it much back then. The finish back then was for me filled with strong orange rind bitterness. Scoring it an 6,5/10 in 2015.

Mid 2016 now and participating in a Twitter Tasting #TheGlenlivetCipher for the release of their latest expression. Also in the line up was the Founders Reserve, so another chance to have a closer look at this expression and see how it now feels to me. On the Glenlivet website they tell us that it is matured in traditional oak and american first fill casks and bottled at 40%.

The nose started with the feeling of bread dough and soft sweet notes. Apple and pear juice, light vanilla note, green grass, buttercups and vanilla sponge cake. All very soft... At first a bit sharp feeling around the edges of some young note roughness but that fades quickly in soft sweet notes.

The palate soft toffee and vanilla sweetness. The apple and pear juice comes back clearly on the palate also. Clover honey, strawberries and dried apricots. A not very long finish. Soft vanilla ice creamy feeling. Fruity, sweet, balanced but fading quickly and soft. Could have used some more strength to it to add some depth maybe. Scoring me an 7 out of 10. Great to have another look at this Glenlivet expression.
